Practice Nurses
Practice nurses provide routine nursing care to our patients. Our nurses provide cervical screening, childhood immunisations, dressings, and vaccinations and assist with chronic disease management.
- Alison Hawthorn - works Monday’s and Tuesdays.
- Sandra Bradley - works on a Thursday afternoon.
Healthcare Assistant (HCA)
Healthcare assistants support the primary care clinical team and carry out procedures such as phlebotomy, ECGs, blood pressure checks and B12 injections.
- Heather Burke - works on a Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
Primary Care Network Healthcare Professionals
A Primary Care Network (PCN) is a group of local practices that work closely together to provide integrated services to the local population. Abbotswood Medical Centre is part of The North Watford Primary Care Network (PCN) alongside Vine House Health Centre and Sheepcot Medical Centre. Together, we share the following healthcare professionals:
Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP)
An Advanced Nurse Practitioner can assess patients, treat minor health problems, acute infections and prescribe where necessary.

Paramedic
Paramedics in general practice provide general medical care under the supervision of a GP. They conduct clinical assessments, evaluation, referrals and treatment for patients in their clinics.
- Mark Burstow - works at Abbotswood on a Tuesday.
Clinical Pharmacists
Clinical pharmacists work alongside the primary care team and specifically work with patients with long term chronic diseases and undertaking clinical medication reviews.

Mental Health Practitioner (MHP)
Mental Health Practitioners support the doctors to help adults with complex mental health needs. They provide assessments, interventions and support for patients that can be managed within primary care.

First Contact Physiotherapist (FCP)
First contact physiotherapists have enhanced skills to assess, diagnose, treat and refer for musculoskeletal (MSK) problems.

Social Prescribers
Social prescribers work with patients to address non-clinical needs and tackle issues that can affect health. They can help to connect patients to local services within the community that provide activities and general services with the aim to promote overall health and wellbeing.

Community Midwives
The Community Midwife Team is based at Watford General Hospital and can be contacted on 01923 217361. Our Community Midwife, Amanda, runs a clinic at Abbotswood on a Thursday.
